What Mattress Firmness Do I Need?

Soft, medium or firm? Discover what mattress firmness really means and how to find the right feel for you.
Start with the feel

Firmness is about comfort, not just support

If you are wondering what mattress firmness you need, the first thing to know is that firmness and support are not the same thing. A mattress can feel soft and still support you properly, while a very firm mattress is not automatically better for your back.

Firmness simply describes how the mattress feels when you lie on it. Your body weight, sleeping position and personal preference all affect that feeling, which is why two people can try the same mattress and describe it very differently.

The aim is not to find the firmest mattress you can tolerate. It is to find the level of comfort that allows your body to relax while keeping you comfortably supported through the night.

Step One

Mattress Firmness Explained

Firmness labels are only a guide, but they can help you understand how much cushioning or resistance to expect when you first lie down.

Soft

More cushioning and sink

Softer mattresses allow the body to sink in more deeply and can feel particularly comfortable around pressure points such as the shoulders and hips.

Medium

A balanced feel

Medium mattresses allow the body to sink in more deeply and can feel particularly comfortable around pressure points such as the shoulders and hips.

combine noticeable cushioning with a supportive feel, making them a popular choice for people who do not want either extreme.

Medium-Firm

Supportive with some give

Medium/Firm mattresses feel more resistant than medium models while still allowing some cushioning around the body.

Firm

Less sink, more resistance

Firmer mattresses allow less sink and can feel more stable beneath the body, which some sleepers prefer for a more solid sleeping surface.

Step Two

Your body weight changes how firm a mattress feels

Firmness isn’t an exact measurement. The more pressure your body places on a mattress, the more you compress its comfort layers and springs. This means the same mattress can feel quite different to two people of different weights.

Lighter Sleepers

A mattress can feel firmer

A lighter person may not compress the mattress as deeply, so they can experience more resistance from the surface. A mattress described as medium-firm may therefore feel noticeably firmer to them.

Average-Weight Sleepers

Closer to the intended feel

For many sleepers, the manufacturer’s firmness description will provide a reasonable starting point. Sleeping position and personal preference will still influence which level feels most comfortable.

Heavier Sleepers

A mattress can feel softer

A heavier person generally compresses the mattress further into its comfort and support layers. As a result, the same mattress may feel softer and allow more sink than it does for a lighter sleeper.

Mattress Medics Tip
Don’t choose a mattress by the firmness label alone. Think about how far you sink into it, whether your body feels evenly supported and, most importantly, whether you are comfortable.
An Important Consideration

Don’t forget the support system underneath you

Firmness describes how a mattress feels, but the support system underneath the comfort layers has a different job. It needs to hold your body effectively and respond appropriately to the weight placed upon it throughout the night.

This is why your body weight matters for more than simply choosing between soft, medium and firm. A lighter sleeper and a much heavier sleeper can require different levels of support from the mattress beneath them, even if they both prefer a similar surface feel.

The construction of the mattress matters too. The type of spring system, the way it responds to pressure, the quality of the materials and the overall build all contribute to how effectively the mattress supports you. A higher spring count alone does not automatically mean better support.

Mattress Medics Tip

Choose the support first, then the comfort

Think of the mattress in two parts: the support system needs to be suitable for the size and weight of the person sleeping on it, while the comfort layers and firmness determine how you want the mattress to feel. Getting both right is much more useful than choosing a mattress simply because its label says soft, medium or firm.

Step Three

Your sleeping position matters

The way you sleep changes where your body places pressure on the mattress, so your usual sleeping position is an important clue when choosing firmness.

Side Sleepers

Usually need more cushioning

Sidesleepers often benefit from a mattress with enough give to cushion the shoulders and hips while still supporting the waist and keeping the spine comfortably aligned.

Back Sleepers

Often suit a balanced feel

Back sleepers usually need enough support to stop the hips sinking too deeply, with enough cushioning to allow the mattress to follow the natural curve of the lower back.

Front Sleepers

Often need more resistance

Front sleepers can find an overly soft mattress allows the hips and abdomen to sink too far. A medium-firm or firmer feel may provide a more stable sleeping surface.

Combination Sleepers

Look for versatility

If you change position regularly, a medium or medium-firm mattress can often give a useful balance of cushioning, support and ease of movement.

Step Four

Is a firm mattress better for back pain?

Not necessarily. A firmer mattress can feel supportive, but very firm does not automatically mean better for your back. What matters is whether the mattress keeps your body comfortably supported without creating excessive pressure.

If a mattress is too soft for you, your hips or shoulders may sink more deeply than is comfortable. If it is too firm, it may create pressure around areas such as the shoulders, hips or lower back and make it harder to relax.

The right firmness is the one that gives you a stable, comfortable sleeping position and allows your body to rest naturally. For many people that may be somewhere around medium or medium-firm, but there is no single firmness level that is right for everybody.

Mattress Medics Tip
If you have persistent or significant back pain, mattress comfort is only one part of the picture. It is sensible to seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on a mattress to treat the underlying problem.
Step Five

Can you compare firmness ratings between brands?

Not always. There is no universal firmness scale used by every mattress manufacturer, so one brand’s medium-firm can feel surprisingly different from another’s.

1

The spring system makes a difference

Different spring types, tensions and constructions respond differently under your body, even when two mattresses carry the same firmness description.

2

The comfort layers change the feel

Foam, latex, wool and other fillings sit above the support system and can dramatically change how soft, cushioned or responsive the surface feels.

3

Your own body is the final judge

Use firmness labels to narrow down your choices rather than treating them as exact measurements. How the mattress actually feels to you matters far more than the word printed on its label.

Think of firmness ratings as signposts rather than measurements.

Step Six

So, what mattress firmness do I need?

There is no perfect firmness for everyone. First make sure the mattress has a support system appropriate for you, then use your sleeping position, body weight and preferred feel to help choose the right level of comfort.

Soft to Medium

More cushioning and give

A useful starting point if you are lighter in build, sleep mainly on your side or simply prefer a more cushioned feel with extra give around the shoulders and hips.

Medium

A balanced starting point

Worth considering if you want a balance of cushioning and support, sleep on your side or back, change position regularly or simply dislike mattresses that feel particularly soft or firm.

Medium-Firm

More support with some give

A useful starting point if you prefer a more supportive feel, sleep mainly on your back, sometimes sleep on your front or tend to sink more deeply into softer mattresses.

Firm

A more solid sleeping surface

Worth considering if you prefer very little sink, sleep predominantly on your front, are heavier in build or consistently find softer mattresses allow you to sink further than feels comfortable.

Remember

These are starting points, not rules. Your body shape, weight, sleeping position and personal preference all affect how a mattress feels. The right mattress is the one that leaves you feeling comfortable, relaxed and properly supported.
